U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen is giving Cañon City $50 Million and they are using it to build a reservoir at John Griffin Park instead of a community pool.
The $50 Million investment in Fremont County through The Water Resources Development Act authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to work on projects in Fremont County that address water resources challenges and will improve our waterways, water infrastructure and stabilization, and/or flood and storm protection. Money is not given directly to the City, County, or Rec District. The City/Country/Rec District also cannot ask the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to use this money to build a pool as that project does not fall within the parameters of appropriate projects under The Water Resources Development Act. The Abbey Event Center was sold and has new owners but City Government nixed the project they had planned.
The Abbey Event Center has been under contract for several years with the potential sale scheduled for later this year. The City has approved a planned development district for the 187-acre property. There are still many steps that need to happen for this project to move forward including minor and major subdivisions.
The City secretly started the Highway 50 Project without any discussion during council meetings or with businesses on Highway 50.
The US Hwy 50 Pedestrian Improvements Project is a partnership between the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the City and it was born as an action step out of the Highway 50 Corridor Master Plan that was completed in 2015. A broad committee of elected officials, city staff, county officials, CDOT, and community representatives was established to review a variety of options to improve pedestrian crossings of US-50 and to produce a recommendation for the best possible solution. This project was discussed during multiple City Council meetings, two public open houses, with additional public outreach and engagement done with multiple meetings dating back through 2014-2017. For more information on this project please visit the project website page at https://www.canoncity.org/506/US-50-Pedestrian-Improvements and/or read the FAQs at https://www.canoncity.org/DocumentCenter/View/3241/FAQ-US-50-Pedestrian-Improvements-Project.
The City is bringing in busloads of homeless people and illegal immigrants from Denver and are receiving a paycheck from the governor for doing this.
There have not been any instances of homeless people or illegal immigrants from Denver being bussed into the City. The Police Department has checked on these types of reports and have not found them to be true. The City is aware we have a number of mostly local homeless people in the community, as many other towns and cities across Colorado and the country are also experiencing. We have not been asked to bring homeless or immigrants to our City and we are not a sanctuary city.
The City has bought Office Depot and is turning it into a homeless shelter.
No, the City has not purchased the Office Depot Building nor has it any plans with the property. There are no plans by the City or any other organization in town to turn this building into a homeless shelter. The Office Depot building is currently for lease or sale and the City’s Economic Development team is working with the building owner, listing agent, and the City’s third-party consultant The Retail Coach to attract a retailer to this space.
